The Story

Coppélia is a comic ballet which premiered in Paris in 1870. The ballet was originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to the music of Leo Delibes, and is based on two stories by E.T.A Hoffman, who also wrote The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. The story takes place in a small European town as a group of villagers prepare for the Harvest Festival, and tells of the beautiful Swanhilda, her beloved Franz, and their discovery of Dr. Coppélius' mysterious shop of dolls and toys.
