Valerie L. Mills is an independent Mathematics Education Consultant, working with mathematics educators and institutions from across the county. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, and master’s degree in guidance and counseling. During her 40+ year career, she has taught high school mathematics, served as Mathematics Department Chair (Ypsilanti Public Schools), served as K-12 Mathematics Coordinator (Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor Public Schools), Director of Curriculum (Ann Arbor Public Schools), and most recently, Mathematics Education Consultant Supervisor at Oakland Schools, a regional resource center serving 28 school districts with approximately 240,000 students. She is currently working with the Michigan State University writing team producing the 4th edition of the Connected Mathematics Project (CMP). She is a past president of both the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics.
Mills was the principal researcher on numerous projects including five Mathematics & Science Partnership grants working with high needs districts. She is a Teacher Author on the Core Plus Mathematics Project, CMP Advisory Board member, past chair of NCTM’s Academy Services Committee, and has written numerous articles and professional development resources including the Secondary Lenses on Learning series. Her most recent NCTM publication is a Fresh Look at Formative Assessment in Mathematics Teaching. Valerie was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the Milken National Educator Award, and MCTM’s Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Mathematics Education. She is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national meetings.
